چکیده

As CubeSats grow in both numbers and capability, the need to extend their reach with integrated propulsion systems is becoming clear. A water-electrolysis propulsion system for 3U CubeSats is proposed that could fill the gap in the available propulsion systems at this scale. Combining the advantages of electric propulsion with those of chemical rockets, the system is safe both to handle and to launch; it is lightweight, and it is capable of providing roughly 1000 m/s, enough V to reach lunar orbit from GTO. The efficiency of the proposed technology is at least 75% for Cornell’s prototype system, consisting of Ni electrodes and 0.5 M KOH as electrolyte. With over 1 km/s of ΔV from 1 kg of water as propellant, sample missions include compensating for drag, orbit raising and lunar exploration.

Attitude Dynamics and Control of a 3U CubeSat with Electrolysis Propulsion

Electrolysis propulsion systems at the CubeSat scale combine the best elements of liquid chemical and electric propulsion systems to create a system that is well-suited for this scale, providing over 800 m/s V while conforming to standard CubeSat specifications. The operations concept for the proposed spacecraft architecture is based on passive spin stabilization, and several factors that dete...

The Opportunities and Challenges of Gnc on a Europa Cubesat Mission Concept

Jupiter’s moon Europa is the target of NASA’s planned Europa Mission. The mission hopes to provide the most detailed view yet of the surface and subsurface of Europa and answer some fundamental questions, including whether Europa has a liquid-water ocean beneath a thick ice shelf, and if these conditions may harbor life. It is envisioned the multiple flyby mission would be only the first in a s...

Deployment Methods for an Origami-Inspired Rigid-Foldable Array

The design for the array was inspired by the origami flasher model (Lang, 1997; Shafer, 2001). Figure 1 shows the array prototyped from Garolite and Kapton film at the CubeSat scale. Prior work demonstrated that rigid panels like solar cells could successfully be folded into the final stowed configuration without requiring the panels to flex (Zirbel, Lang, Thomson, & al., 2013). The design of t...

SSC14 VII-7 An Autonomous Proximity Navigation Testbed for Nanosatellites

The goal of this work is to develop techniques and tools to enhance small-spacecraft in-orbit autonomy. The focus is on developing perception and control algorithms to enable autonomous proximity operations, and performing preliminary validation in a laboratory air-bearing testbed. To achieve this, we have developed cubesat engineering models equipped with a simple cold-gas propulsion system, o...

The Applicability of Pulsed Plasma Thrusters to Rendezvous and Docking of Cubesats

Despite the interest in formation flying and cubesats over something like the last decade or so, close controlled formation flying of two cubesat size spacecraft has not been achieved. Similarly, despite the growing interest in propulsion systems for cubesats, there are very few commercially available and flight ready systems. If these are coupled with the realization that formation flying coul...
